Filming: If I Were To Speak of War!
So my boyfriend and writing partner Matthew and I have started filming our latest script, this time a short film instead of a play! Our latest project is entitled, “If I Were to Speak of War.” Interestingly, I got the title from a short speech by Clara Barton, who was a Union nurse during the Civil War. I did a project on her years ago, when I was in fourth grade, and I quoted her during my presentation. Her speech went something like this, “If I were to speak of war, it would not be to tout the glory of conquering armies, but the mischief and misery they strew in their tracks; and how, while they march on to with the threat of iron and plume, someone must follow closely in their tracks in the mud…” That’s all I remember, but that first line made a big impression on me, so we entitled our short film that.
In addition to co-writing the script, I am also acting in the film, playing Theresa, the wife of the main character.
The film is about an Afghanistan veteran who tries desperately to shut out his past, ignoring his wife’s questions and his VA doctor’s advise, choosing to spend time fishing instead. He meets a fellow veteran at his anger management class however, who encourages him to write about his experiences.
It is a very cerebral film, and really delves into the psyche of a quiet veteran, who just wants to keep his trauma to himself. I think it will be an important film for us to make, with our current mission statement with our company. We’ll see how it goes! Below is a picture of our director, Marcus Mars, on location!
